GW6 Update

Well. We've missed a few updates on the Fantasy Football league, due in no small part to the preparations for the new academic year.  

But....we're back! 

As I'm writing this, our new first year students have arrived on campus for Induction Week.  And faculty are very much looking forward to welcoming everyone back for the new semester kick-off next Monday 4th October.

GW6 Update
When we last looked at the Premierleague table in GW3, Spurs were top and Arsenal were bottom.  Looking at the table today, we Arsenal in 10th and Spurs in 11th.  
But let's be honest, we're not really interest in *that* table.  
Our EHUBS-FF League Table has remained fairly similar at the top, with recent grad Jack Arliss continuing to score points, overtaking his arch-nemesis Joseph Waring at the top of the league.

Top Performers 
Our runaway point-snatcher this week is none other than Vinnie McCarron, who's team - DacksOutForNyambe - scored 67pts. 
With 42pts, a distinctly average performance for Harry Scott's HS10 XI, who conspired to leave 21pts sitting on his bench, making Harry this week's Bench Warmer of the Week.  
Dr Ian Gibson features yet again, as he performs a recovery which can be described only as "Allardycean".  Dr Gibson's team - Baxter Athletic - jumps 14 places, more than any other team in GW6.  

From the Sublime to the Pathetic 
Do you believe in curses?  I believe in curses.  And most of all I believe that those curses are now infecting my Fantasy Football team.  

The last few weeks have seen Dr Mike Gow's team - Judas Ancelotti - descend nearly to the foot of the table.  It is disastrous.  It is catastrophic. It is pathetic. It may very well be a conspiracy.  
With a total of 29pts in GW5 and 34 points in GW6, Dr Gow (yours truly) has now decided to dispense with caution and go "full maniac" with a much needed Wildcard before GW7.

He needs to do this - given he's writing these updates and lecturing everyone on their own fantasy football strategy - or he could end up embarrassing himself.  
Although, it is possible that Dr Gow will insist that even a cursory analysis of his fantasy football tactics will reveal the importance of understanding how forms of bias (Salah-Dodging, Triple Everton, Cristia-NO Ronaldo) can negatively impact performance.  

It is at times like these that Dr Gow often seeks out inspirational and motivational input from his most valued colleagues.  Yet, so supportive are his colleagues at EHU Business School that sometimes they offer "unsolicited advice", as was the case this morning.  Dr Giles McClelland has wisely counselled Dr Gow, emphasising need to "sort yourself out" or risk becoming the "Steve Bruce of Edge Hill University Business School".  
Wise words indeed.  

GW7 Preparation
We've got one more week before another dreaded international break.  The deadline for transfers is 11am on Saturday 2nd October 2021.  So get those teams sorted, and let battle commence.

Why Fantasy Football? Communities and Critical Thinking

Why Fantasy Football? Communities and Critical Thinking Many of us have an interest in football, and many of use already play Fantasy Football with friends.  Yet, there's also a solid pedagogical reason for us to get as many participants here.   Firstly, I'm very much hoping to use this to help students and staff engage beyond the classroom.  University works best when we have a connected educational community and a relaxed environment to explore our subject area.   To this end, I'll be providing updates regularly.  However, I also hope we can use this game to help build our community and have some fun.   Secondly - and perhaps more importantly for our business school - Fantasy Football *can* help students understand some key elemetns of critical thinking.  Like business, FF is a competitive environment, which has a pronounced impact on the way our decision-making and risk analysis processes work.  Playing the game and competing wit...
